Joint Physics Initiative for study of orbital angular momentum mode fiber amplification of optical pulses

Abstract

The overall objective is to address limits on ultra-short pulses and coherently combined phased-array high-energy lasers imposed by phase distortions resulting from thermal, acoustic, and fiber effects. Thus, we propose to experimentally explore the use of vortex modes to mitigate such phase distortions and allow further power scaling. This will lead to exploitation of benefits to ultimately enable improved fiber designs and high-energy optical pulse amplification at kWs of average power.
