Small-Diameter PAN-based Carbon Fibers

Abstract

This fundamental research project is aimed at exploring the formation of small diameter carbon fibers (approximately 3 microns diameter) using wet-spun polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fibers from commercial sources. Electrolytic surface treatment methods and sizing recipes optimized for adhesion to epoxy resins will be adapted to these novel fibers. The project will focus on the use of commercially-available precursor fibers and if these are not capable will include the wet-spinning of precursor fibers suitable for carbonization into small-diameter carbon fiber.
