CNT Network (Web) and Wall (Curtain) Structures

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to develop enabling materials for electrodes in battery and fuel cell and to explore 3D nanostructured architectures based on CNTs to enable optimal performance. The goal is to investigate the performance improvement depending on the design of architectures as well as provide a new capability of flexibility. The synthesis of CNTs, fabrication of three dimensional hierarchical structures for cathodes, surface modification, sulfur and platinum loading, and characterization and performance of cathode electrodes will be carried out. The horizontal growth of CNTs on micro pillars for interconnections between adjacent pillars will be conducted by using both thermal CVD and Autonomous Research System (ARES), respectively, and the fundamental physical properties of architectures formed by between CVD-grown CNTswith chirality control and thermal CVD-grown CNTs will be investigated.
