The Origin of Trust within Organization: A Multilevel Perspective
Abstract
Trust, an intangible attribute critical in driving organizational success, appears in all levels of organization. This can be seen of trust literature where trust studies have been investigated from individual level to organizational level. Its importance lies not only on how employees may behave, how employees interact with one another, but also how it may affect the team as a whole. Trust itself can be viewed from three aspects: trustworthiness, trust propensity, and trust (as a process/behavior). With an emphasis looking at organizational contexts (i.e., direct leadership style, organizational and leadership climate) on employees’ work outcomes, first, the current research intends to investigate the relationship between direct leadership, the team, and team members through three perspectives: individual level, team level, and cross level (team level to individual level); in addition, how the three aspects of trust may transpire in these organizational contexts. We propose in a high power distance country, leaders act as an antecedent of trust for the team and will influence both team level performance and individual level work outcomes. We then seek to investigate if similar patterns are observed in countries that are more individualistic and are lower in power distance.
