Development of New Azobenzene Photo Alignment Molecules on Controlling the Tilt Angle of Liquid Crystals

Abstract

Cholesteric liquid crystals CLCs showing selective reflection maximum reflection ? 50% of light, which can applied to optical fibers, light shutters, smart windows and display have been of great interest. To control reflection band, bandwidth broadening and switching response of dynamic electro optical EO responsible polymer stabilized CLCs PSCLC at different oblique incidence angles were reported. At the large oblique angle > 50 degree, a single PSCLC cell exhibited very high optical density > 99% reflection and even high out of band transmission. However, to be used as an optical device, a large prism having an angle of 60 degree or more must be used, that becomes a big hurdle to overcome. Instead of using an oblique angle incidence prism method, an alternative approach is to tilt the helical axis of CLC across the cell thickness.
