Full Wave Simulations of Bistatic Radar Clutter of Rough Ground Surfaces, Vegetation, and Trees between 1 GHz and 10 GHz

Abstract

The main objective of this research is to investigate the application of bistatic radar configuration combined with polarimetry and interferometry techniques to enhance radar detection in complex environments. We propose to develop theoretical models based on full wave simulations of bistatic radar clutter between 1 GHz and 10 GHz that makes technological advancement in this complex problem. We (a) introduce a new hybrid approach of combining Foldy-Lax multiple scattering equations and off-the-shelf technologies of full wave simulations of scattering by vegetation and trees. (b) We will use Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method of rough surface scattering to compare with prior technologies of Method of Moments (MoM) simulations. (c) We compute stochastic distributions, averages and variances of radar cross sections and coherency matrices and prepare look-up tables of radar clutter for rough surfaces and vegetation/trees.
