Investigating magnetoelectric multiglasses using nonlinear dielectric and magnetic susceptibilities

Abstract

The nonlinear components of the magnetic and dielectric susceptibilities contain a wealth of information about the systems under investigation. However, they still remain relatively underutilized tools, owing to the fact that they are typically a few orders of magnitude smaller than their linear counterparts, making their measurements a non-trivial exercise. We aim to set-up measurement apparatus for the temperature dependent measurements of these hyper-susceptibilities, and use them in the investigation of a class of systems called the magneto-electric multiglasses. These systems are purported to combine the properties of a magnetic spin/cluster glass and a ferroelectric relaxor, and is expected to exhibit novel phenomena like cross-coupled memory effects and the multicaloric effect. To this end, we propose the synthesis and characterisation of a number of 3d, 4d and 5d transition metal oxides in an attempt to uncover possible multiglass states which they may harbour.
