INVESTIGATION OF SODIUM LAYER ANISOTROPIES FOR ATMOSPHERIC TIP-TILT RETRIEVAL USING LASER GUIDE STARS

Abstract

Adaptive Optics can be used to correct atmospheric distortions in laser beams by using a Laser Guide Star on the uplink expected location and retrieving all the atmospheric modes from the LGS, including tip-tilt. However, the tip-tilt determination problem arising from the use of Laser Guide Stars is yet to be solved. This project aims to investigate the hypothesis related to the presence of nonuniformities-anisotropies in the sodium layer and how they could be used to extract tip-tilt information from a Laser Guide Star. Achievable resolution in the measurement and its suitability for ground-to-space optical communications are questions to be answered throughout the project.
