Data-Driven Reduced Order Modelling and Preliminary Experimentation for Combined Transonic Buffet and Freeplay Induced Limit Cycle Oscillations

Abstract

This project aims to experimentally and numerically investigate the interaction between transonic shock buffet and freeplay nonlinearity. Using a novel experimental dataset for validation, a reduced-order modelling (ROM) framework will be developed with a focus on buffeting (self-excited) transonic flows, where discrete structural nonlinearity is also present. This is a high-risk- high-reward program, where a novel ROM framework and subsequent insights gained towards this complex paradigm in nonlinear aeroelasticity will support current and future NextGen aircraft design and sustainment programs.
