3D Split of Obfuscation, Authentication and Licensing (3D SOUL)

Abstract

In order to make the key a truly moving target such that it change from chip to chip and from activation to activation, and to avoid storage of the key in the untrusted chip, the obfuscation architecture is split into a trusted an untrusted chip, similar to SPADE architecture. At packaging, the trusted and untrusted chip(s) are package bounded to one another. The trusted chip is fabricated in an older but trusted foundry providing us with high security. The untrusted chip then could be fabricated at an untrusted foundry at its obfuscated form (to prevent RE, and lower the chances of Trojan insertion), and will provide us with higher speed & scalability, and lower power. The communication between the trusted & untrusted chip is also secured. During synthesis, 3D-SOUL’s secure-compiler chooses a combination of logic, route and FSM obfuscation.
