Development and Characterization of Nanophased Advanced Materials for Airframe Applications
Abstract
The objective of this proposal is to develop a binary nanophased graphene nanoplatelets+nanoclay (GNP-N) carbon fiber reinforced epoxy polymeric (CFRP) composite for airframe structural applications in quadrotor, fuselage, and wing. In year 1, an Epoxy polymer composite will be developed by infusing amino-functionalized 0-0.5 wt% graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to determine the optimum amount of GNP. Data from mechanical, viscoelastic, and thermal tests will be used to optimize amount of nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) will be performed on GNP and GNP-N infused epoxy samples to evaluate the state of dispersion of these nanoparticles into epoxy as well as morphological change in epoxy due to the addition of these nanoparticles. In year 2, both conventional and nanophased carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites will be fabricated by employing a combination of hand lay-up and compression hot press techniques as well as vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. The nanophased CFRP composite will be fabricated reinforced with GNP-loaded as well as GNP-N-loaded epoxy using the optimum amount of GNP and GNP-N, respectively. Physical, mechanical, viscoelastic, and thermal characterization on these composites will be performed to find the improvement in properties due to the integration of GNP and binary nanoparticles in the composite. In year 3, binary nanoparticle infused CRFP composite samples will be tested with UV exposure and moisture absorption, separately and in combination. Finally, surface and fracture morphology will be studied using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and infrared thermography (IRT) evaluation, respectively.
