STEMPREP Project - Producing a Diverse Workforce for the DoD
Abstract
The STEMPREP Project, which annually receives more than 200 applications for the 7th grade class, is seeking Year 2 funding to continue to increase the number of trainees in each of the ten classes. In addition, the Project is seeking Year 2 funding to prepare more of our trainees for the DOD STEM workforce by exposing them during the training pipeline to DOD STEM career fields: (1) junior & senior high trainees will gain “exposure” to the DOD in 7th – 10th grade summers via an annual DOD speaker series at HBCUs; and (2) those senior high trainees 01 interested in a DOD career will gain “work experience” starting in the 11th summer by interning in STEM labs at DOD facilities, which will make them “recommendation letter” eligible for the DOD SMART scholarship for college; and (3) during the college and graduate school summers, STEMPREP trainees (SMART recipients and non-SMART recipients) will gain further “work experience” by interning in DOD facilities. The STEMPREP Project is seeking to have the DOD provide training opportunities at its STEM worksites and early financial support to members of the emerging majority who deserve to participate in a diverse DOD workforce in the 21st century.
