Additive Manufacturing of an Embedded Pressure Sensor for Extreme Environments

Abstract

Previous research, utilizing a soft lithography technique, demonstrated that fully-dense silicoaluminumcarbonitride (SiAlCN) ceramics can detect very small changes in applied force. By nature, SiAlCN is a piezo-resistive materail - when under pressure, the resistivity changes. Here, we propose to 3D print similar polymer-derived ceramic materials (PDC) for incorporation into an embedded pressure sensor for fuze applications. The task objective of the research will include: 1) materials characterization, 2) prototype development and 3) dynamic measurements to obtain pressure readings over a set of applied hydrostatic pressures.
