Growing STEM Awareness
Abstract
The knowledge base needed for the work force of today is increasingly STEM dependent. This is especially true in military related career fields, inclusive of the demand for US Citizens eligible for work in the defense industry. These employees will come from today’s student population. Yet, every secondary state tested area for science and math showed an increase in the number of non-proficient students. This trend is particularly evident in the learning gaps created from the COVID-19 pandemic, irregular school attendance and learning platforms. A significant number of Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) students are military connected and showed some of the largest drops in proficiency in science and math state tests. These are common discussion points in education today. The OCSD has already invested district monies in STEM classes, science and math professional development training, and in-service education on best practices in classroom instruction in science, math, and the use of technology in the classroom. The goal of the “Growing STEM Awareness” proposal is to support the OCSD overarching mission to empower students to be college and career ready with a focus on STEM careers. This will be achieved through increased access to STEM equipment and learning kits and funding to support the STEM competitions, such as the East Panhandle Science and Engineering Fair which services students in Okaloosa and Walton counties.
