Unpacking blast fragment and pressure wave contributions to target deformation and failure

Abstract

Explosive loading, whether as a deliberate attack in conflict zones or due to industrial accidents, subjects structures, vehicles and personnel to both blast pressure wave loading and projectile impact ranging from shrapnel or explosive casing fragments to secondary projectiles accelerated by the blast wave. While blast loading and projectile impact of structural panels is a mature research area, most studies have investigated these loadings independently. Very little has been published on the combined effect of blast loading and projectile impact, despite the real-world scenario involving these as near simultaneous loads. The planned experiments will generate high quality data which can help validate computational simulations of the experiments using explicit FEA or hydrocodes, which in turn help to understand the evolution of the deformation and fracture mechanisms.
