Exploring Photonic Band Structures, Topologies and Photonic Molecules using Programmable Photonic Circuits

Abstract

The researchers want to explore the possibilities of programmable photonic filters in programmable photonic circuits based on recirculating meshes. Filters are essential building blocks for many functions, but their configuration remains difficult, even in conventional circuits. In programmable circuits, the many degrees of freedom require new synthesis methods. Analogies with photonic molecules will be investigated by exploring the effects of periodicity and analyzing photonic band structures, and topological protection in edge states. Also, new nonuniform mesh topologies will be investigated. The researchers will study these both theoretically and experimentally, implementing the new methods into programming layers for existing and new photonic circuits.
