Resonator-integrated two-photon absorption for single-photon sources and quantum gates

Abstract

Atomic and molecular systems can exhibit two-photon absorption (TPA), in which the simultaneous presence of two photons is required to drive a transition in the medium. This kind of non-linearity can be used to implement optical logic with bright pulses of light. Here, we consider enhancing this interaction in fibre-coupled optical cavities, to enable low-light-level nonlinearity and quantum logic (photon-photon gates). We will build and test silica microbubble resonators (MBRs) filled with dye molecules, and ring-cavities containing rubidium vapour. We will assess the feasibility of generating single photons via the quantum Zeno effect mediated by TPA, and investigate controlled phase-gates between photonic qubits.
