Deep Neuromorphic Photonic Machines

Abstract

The project proposes to investigate a novel experimental framework for photonics-based neuromorphic computing to solve complex computational tasks with application to sensing and control engineering. The underlying goal is overcome the current limitations and challenges faced by traditional software-based machine learning techniques such as limited information processing bandwidth and low energy efficiency. The project will combine concept at the interface of Deep Learning and Photonics devices to create novel proof-of-concept physical architectures to solve efficiently and with state-of-the-art performance complex problems relevant for the AFOSR such as LIDAR sensing and control of complex dynamical systems.
