Rough-wall turbulent boundary layer subjected to streamwise pressure gradients

Abstract

This project aims to characterise the evolution of a non-zero pressure gradient (PG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) over rough surfaces and thereby identify the parameters that dictate the response of the boundary layer to a streamwise pressure gradient. A comprehensive series of wind tunnel experiments will be performed to generate unprecedented data on rough-wall boundary layers subject to pressure gradients. The obtained data will underpin identification and validation of potential universalities (and differences) in flow structure as well as mechanisms of momentum-energy transfer compared to ZPG flows. Synthesising the insights obtained from the data, a new framework will be developed (or modifications to existing one will be made) to predict and optimise the influence of streamwise pressure gradient on rough-wall flows.
