Project Proposal- Novel Ultra-Short Pulse Laser Techniques for NIR Optics

Abstract

Optical components are used in a bewildering array of modern technologies including in areas of defense, medicine, communications, and consumer electronics. The availability, capability and usefulness of these technologies is dependent on the ability to manufacture them, and in turn on manufacturing capabilities. Within this project we propose to explore an entirely novel capability- the use of Ultra-short pulse lasers combined with a truly 3D freeform beam manipulation system based on a pair of Spatial Light Modulators (SLM). By exploring these novel smart focusing laser beams we aim to develop novel manufacturing techniques that will underpin the next generation of photonic based devices.
