Secure Communications Channels Using Atomosphere-Limited Line-Of Sight Terahertz Links

Abstract

The research will involve studies of the propagation of modulated THz signals at frequencies near those of water vapor absorption lines. As the frequency of the transmitted signal is tuned closer to an absorption line, one can anticipate changes in the attenuation (and therefore propagation range), but also changes in the bit error rate due to both frequency-dependent attenuation and frequency-dependent dispersion arising from the van Vleck-Weisskopf line shape of the absorption line.
