DE-JTO Educational Initiative

Abstract

The Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) offers this proposal in response to the DE-JTO Educational Initiative Assistance Instrument solicitation, Funding Opportunity Announcement FOA-RDK-2019-0001, dated 29 May 2019. DEPS is a professional society composed of scientists and engineers, whose technical interests lay in high energy laser (HEL) and high power microwave (HPM) areas. DEPS has supported the DE JTO’s “Educational Initiative Program” the past eighteen years, as the primary executor of their Basic Research grant. DEPS has partnered with the AF Institute of Technology Center for Directed Energy on this proposal, to provide technical editing and technology relevance to the educational material developed under this proposal. DEPS proposes a diversified approach to build and expand awareness of and interest in the DE technical, scientific, and engineering fields among the current and future workforce. This is required to continue and grow current and future DE fields of interest, which include technology, science, prototype systems, programs, and test and evaluation capabilities for military and commercial DE systems. The proposed, cost-effective approach is based upon new and innovative programs as well as current DEPS programs that have already proven effective in achieving these goals. Elements of this proposal include: (P2) Foster and expand graduate and undergraduate student interest; (P3) DE Educational opportunities for the existing workforce; (P4) DE Publications; and (P5) Provide for workshops and conferences on DE education.
