Web Science Trust Observatory Project

Abstract

Objective: The web observatory proposes a global network of inter-operating data repositories gathering domain specific data sets and employing a rich set of interfaces for discovery, content/service negotiation, and data exchange/sharing under a variety of licenses. The intention is to allow these data repositories to operate in a similar fashion to the virtual observatory alliance in the field of astronomy. Approach: Researchers working with the trust are defining new models of observation, key technical approaches, visualization approaches, and a fundamental structure for observatories. Reporting into the W3C community group on observatories and working with experts in networking, law and sematic technologies, WST are supporting the emergence of data and communication standards that will enable a global web observatory to coalesce from the diverse parties that are seeking to benefit from such an undertaking.
