Nonlinear dynamics and control of near-wall turbulence

Abstract

In previous work, the PI has shown that the key features of turbulence at large levels of drag reduction by polymers are also found in purely Newtonian fluids. He has linked these observations to certain flow features in the turbulence that are associated with low levels of drag. The proposed work will move away from identifying these flow features in isolation and will focus on connecting known flow states with low drag to experimentally observable states in turbulence. By doing so, he enables the first steps towards using the drag reduction observations in an implementable drag reduction system.
