Non-Foster Source-load Networks and Metasurfaces

Abstract

Current (passive) metamaterials have two significant problems: pronounced losses and a narrow operating bandwidth. We propose working around these limits by using "non-Foster" elements (active electronic circuits behaving as negative capacitors or inductors) to compensate for the inherent dispersion of the metamaterials. This is a followon project from FA8655-10-1-3030, in which this team showed the possibility of active metamaterials with very wide bandwith. Unfortunately these complex metamaterials are very unstable.
