Hybrid Silicon/Silica Photonics Platform for Low-Power Digital Optoelectronic Switching and Logic Devices

Abstract

In the proposed research efforr the team will develop low power, scalable optically bistable devices useful for optoelectronic switching and logic. Optical computing has been a long-standing goal for physicists, but the large size and power consumption of the switching devices have previously limited their utility. In his research, Prof. Majumdar will address power, size and scalability issues of the optical computing device. The primary goals of the proposed research are to build optically bistable devices operating at as little as 100 photons and demonstrating the platform scalability, towards realizing an optical computing system.
