Crumpled and Prescriptively Folded Polymer Films for Advanced Lightweight Materials

Abstract

The objective of the proposal is to examine the failure of thin polymer films during bending and relate this to the overall macroscopic material behavior of crumpled or prescriptively folded polymer films. This basic study of film relaxation under stress, particularly folding deformation will provide insights on composite reinforcement potential of complex geometric structures. The work should also implications for origami folding of materials and structures and should provide transferrable basic understanding in this area.
