Canonical Shear Flow Interactions with Unsteady Airfoils

Abstract

The objective of the proposed effort is to determine how the basic flow physics of unsteady airfoils is altered when the upstream approach flow is changed from the traditional uniform conditions to that of non-uniform flow. For a given airfoil motion trajectory (amplitude, frequency, shape of trajectory), the PIs will explore the connection between the upstream non-uniform flow and the time history of the vorticity at the trailing edge, the dynamics and evolution of flow structures in terms of the vorticity field, the conditions for generation of thrust/drag and lift, and the load history on the airfoil.
