Elucidating Actuation-Induced Failure Mechanisms in High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys
Abstract
Newly discovered nano-precipitation hardened Ni-rich NiTi(Hf,Zr) High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys (HTSMAs) can possibly operate at up to 500 degrees C with a fully recoverable deformation of 3 to 5% under stresses up to 500 MPa. The aim of this project is to develop the foundational knowledge required to enable the development, design, and optimization of these new shape memory alloys for USAF active shape control and morphing structures.
