Instrument Development: Bio-Inspired Low Noise Spectral-Polarization Imaging System

Abstract

The PI intends to develop low-noise, stereoscopic, multispectral and polarization sensitive imaging system inspired by the multimodal imaging aspect of the mantis shrimp’s visual system. Block diagram of the proposed imaging system is presented in Figure 1. The proposed system will be composed of two low noise sensors coupled via a custom beam-splitter: (1) a low noise scientific CMOS (sCMOS) imager from Andor with readnoise of <1e- and low dark currents and (2) low-noise custom CMOS imager with vertically stacked photodetectors.
