High-Speed, Real-Time Infrared Imaging of Hot Spots in Reactive Materials: Dynamic Experiments and 3D Modeling

Abstract

Characterizing the influence of microstructure and material properties on hot-spots dynamics in energetic materials requires an ability to perform detailed mesoscale measurements of hot-spot evolution in real time under well controlled and interpretable dynamic loading conditions. Such measurements will also serve as benchmarks for numerical simulations that would be needed to develop a predictive platform for energetic materials design. The objective of this research is to develop an integrated experimental and computational capability to meet these challenges.
