Role of Effective Communication in Trust Building: Application to Human-Computer Interaction

Abstract

The proposed research goal is to investigate design considerations for autonomous systems that induce trust in their human counterparts, and respond to changes in operator states (e.g., trust) with appropriately adaptive behavior. Specifically, over three years they will 1) strive to understand what system information is essential in facilitating trusted human-machine interactions in high-risk scenarios, 2) determine how to best communicate that information to operators to promote trust, and 3) understand how operator state monitoring can be used to appropriately adapt system behavior when trust degrades over time.
