Multi-scale structuring of the polar ionosphere by magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions

Abstract

This research will investigate mechanisms of ionospheric structuring at high latitudes by determining (1) the characteristics of density gradients in Earth s open field line regions; (2) the extent of F-region structures observed in the polar cap and if they are consistent with structuring mechanisms observed in the dayside merging region, cusp, and poleward auroral boundary; and (3) the consequences of these gradient structures on energy dissipation and mass redistribution in the geospace system.
