Optomechanics with Nanostructured Materials

Abstract

This project will lay the design foundations for nanophotonic structures that impart substantial and controllable optical forces to actuate tuning elements in photonic networks. The approach will use a metal film with small plasmonic cavities formed along the surface, which is expected to result in one to two orders of magnitude higher pressure with a given optical power density. The substantially enhanced optical force will also be used for nanoparticle positioning and trapping for material synthesis on the nanometer scale and for molecular spectroscopy.
