Exchange Bias: From Basic Physics Towards Applications

Abstract

Proposal Objectives are:1. Define precise crystallographic structure of the FM/AF interface;2. Investigate the origin, location and distribution of the uncompensated pinned spins inthe AF, which give rise to the EB phenomenon;3. Define role of the pinned spins in the bulk of the AF;4. Model the magnetization reversal mechanisms and their interrelation with EB;5. Define the role of the dierent length scales involved;6. Use the understanding of the above issues to improve and/orbetter control the performance of devices that rely on the EB eect.
