Understanding The Mechanisms That Lead To Human Performance Enhancement
Abstract
The objective is to understand the neural mechanisms and connections responsible for understanding and manipulating memory enhancement. This PI is seeking to understand how the motor cortex is connected with other areas of the brain immediately after learning. He will know when learning takes place because the physiological parameters associated with learning are increased. He intends to use fMRI immediately after learning and again 12 hours later and compare these views with resting state views, and delineate the changes in the "networks" connected to the Motor Cortex. Next the PI will use transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to determine how this modality can modify a motor skill memory. TMS has shown that it induces motor skill enhancement during consolidation. The connection with fMRI and TMS enables the PI to show how circuits (connections) support the development of learning improvements. This experiment is set up to understand how the circuits that are critical for inhibiting learning are stimulated so they can learn to "turn them off".
