New Multi-Scale Based Damage Evolution and Failure Models for Prognosis of Composite Structures

Abstract

The objective of this project is to explore damage and failure mechanisms and evaluation of composite structures used more in aircraft structures in order to reduce weight (and save fuel). As structures become lighter they also become more flexible and deform more. This in turn changes the aerodynamics of flight loads on the structures resulting in more bending and combined loadings. This project will investigate new modeling and simulation techniques and failure mechanisms for new flight structures.
