Hypersonic Transition Experiments in Ludwieg Tubes

Abstract

The objective of the proposed project is to measure growth of boundary layer disturbances andtheir response on freestream distortions for two fundamentally different configurations, representative of a wide range of hypersonic vehicles. One is a blunt shape where transientgrowth of boundary layer disturbances is expected. The other is a slender cone where lineargrowth and nonlinear break down of second instability modes of the boundary layer take place. The selected transition phenomena represent two major paths to boundary layer transition, whichare within the focus of the international study group within the Science and TechnologyOrganisation (STO) of NATO, AVT 240.
