Programmable Origami Metamaterials With Adaptive Stiffness
Abstract
The research program described in this proposal seeks to create a new generation of programmable mechanical metamaterials based on origami whose stiffness can be adaptive to the external loadings it is subjected to. The programmable feature is achieved by an intelligent arrangement of creases within an origami pattern that forms the metamaterial, and by merging patterns that possess various stiffnesses. The novel metamaterials can be used for applications ranging from bodies of transport vehicles, armors, to non-lethal projectiles for peace support operations.
