Plenoptic Imaging System For Instantaneous 3D Flow Measurements

Abstract

It is proposed here to purchase the advanced instrumentation necessary to construct a new state-of-the-art plenoptic imaging system. This system will support both ongoing and planned diagnostic development efforts as well expand the scope of measurements that are currently being performed as part of ongoing DoD sponsored research projects. The single camera nature of plenoptic based methods greatly simplifies experimental complexity and allows for application of 3D flow diagnostics in ground test facilities with limited optical access. It also allows for the development of non-particle based 3D flow diagnostics (e.g. 3D BOS and LIF) that would be difficult to achieve with more complex and expensive multi-camera systems.
