New Functionality In Van Der Waals Heterostructures
Abstract
The existing work on 2D materials has chiefly focused on graphene and semiconducting materials due to their relative chemical stability and the easy tunability of properties using a gate electrode. On the other hand, metallic 2D materials can display a diverse range of quantum phases such as charge and spin order and superconductivity, all of which open up new functional possibilities. Under this proposal, the PI will investigate four separate functionalities in van der Waals heterostructures. The challenges to overcome include the synthesis of these materials, assembly of heterostructures while preserving material and interface integrity, and the fabrication of devices without degradation of their electronic properties. In the past few years, the PI s group has developed effective techniques to solve each of these challenges.
