Approaches to Neuro-Hope: Assessment of Current and Near-Future Neuroscientific and Technological Trends,Capabilites, and Operational Uses

Abstract

Brain and nervous system stimulation and understanding is something the DoD is highly interested in. DARPA has a current project titled "Targeted Neuroplasticity Training" looking at stimulus of the vagus nerve to determine if it assists with speaking a foreign language. The Air Force Research Laboratory has been studying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to determine if this small level of current can decrease stress levels, increase attentiveness, increase cognitive processes and increase ability to perform tasks. This proposal is set to determine the gaps associated with this type of research as well as define the actual capabilities and limitations of these types of research approaches. it will also study the long term effects of such modalities as well as the correct use and misuse of these modalities.
