Nonequilibrium Gas-Surface Interactions at High Temperature

Abstract

The main objectives of the proposed research include (1) fabricating new TPS samples and coatings including microstructure characterization along with direct simulation of microstructure reactions with boundary-layer gases, (2) using molecular beam experiments to determine individual gas-surface reaction rates, and (3) applying advanced CFD simulations to accurately characterize ablation experiments and validate the new models with data from a number of facilities. The work will benefit from and continue a collaboration that was begun as part of an AFOSR MURI project that expired in September 2015.
