The Marvin Minsky Institute for Society of Mind Theory

Abstract

This proposal aims to examine an architecture of reasoning and learning components that work together to extend a range of functions exhibiting machine intelligence. Results from this work will extend the capabilities of the Genesis story understanding, storycreation, and dialog systems, with high-level reflective capabilities inspired by MarvinMinsky’s Society of Mind cognitive architecture. Genesis now has the capability tounderstand simple short stories expressed in English, such as the plot of Macbeth, bymatching story patterns common to human narratives. With an enhanced reflectivecapability, it will be able to reflect upon the goals and motivations of characters, provideunderstandable explanations of themes, deal with hypothetical situations, and integratemodels of sensory perception. The PI believes this will be an important step towardsunderstanding the two major competences necessary for human intelligence: the symbolicdescription competence, and the story competence.
