Unsteady Separation Mechanism and Mitigation

Abstract

The objective of the proposal is to identify the cause of large-scale separation unsteadiness in compressible, turbulent flow, and mitigate the unsteadiness with controlled disturbances. Past research has produced two competing quantitative models of separation (there many other models that are qualitative and more difficult to test): a self-excited oscillator and a frequencyselective amplifier. The present project will attempt to falsify one or both of these models using two quantitative theories which provide testable predictions.
