Student Support for the Frontiers in Attosecond & X-ray Science School

Abstract

The first-of-a-kind school entitled the “Frontiers of Attosecond and Ultrafast X-ray Science”(http://www.erice-attosecond.it/) (FAXS) will be held during March 19-28, 2017 at the EttoreMajorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (http://www.ccsem.infn.it/) in Erice,Sicily. The FAXS Directors are Louis DiMauro (The Ohio State University, USA), AlicjaDomaracka (CIMAP-CNRS, France) and Mauro Nisoli (Politecnico di Milano, Italy). Therequested funds will be used to support the registration fee for young scientist (graduate studentsand postdocs) from US institutions and administered by Prof. DiMauro. This proposal seeks to fill a void in the ultrafast community by establishing a new School thatwill train young scientist in two emerging complementary areas, attosecond and ultrafast x-rayscience. The inaugural school program will have lectures by 21 leading international experts inattosecond and x-ray science. The majority of lecturers will deliver a series of 3 lectures. The EriceMajorana Center venue can accommodate ~75 young scientist. We anticipate that the FAXSSchool will meet on a regular basis every two years, act as preparatory school for younginvestigators attending the biannual “International Conference of Attosecond Physics” (July 2-7,2017 in Xi’an, China) and provide a continuous foundation for the ultrafast community. The maintopics of the course are the following: (i) attosecond science and technology, devoted to thegeneration and application of attosecond pulses to the investigation of electronic dynamics inatoms, molecules, nanostructures and condensed phases and (ii) fundamentals, methods andapplications of free electron lasers, synchrotron radiation, ion collisions in atomic and molecularscience. All these topics are encompassed by scientific interest funded by the AFOSR andparticularly the AFOSR Laser-Matter Interaction program.
