Support for a workshop in Italy on uncertainty quantification

Abstract

At the workshop Quantification of Uncertainty: Improving Efficiency and Technology, leadingexperts will present recent progress and discuss future directions of algorithmic and mathematicalresearch in the quantification of uncertainties in the outputs of complex systems that are subjectto random uncertainties in their inputs. Because such systems are ubiquitous, the workshop willimpact the scientific, engineering, social, financial, economic, environmental, and commercialmilieus. The lectures and discussions will focus on means for reducing the cost of obtaining highlyaccurate, quantitative information about such uncertainties that can be used by designers and policymakers to make useful and credible decisions. In particular, attention will be paid to means forreducing the cost of computer simulations of the complex system and/or reducing the number ofsimulations needed to realize this goal.
