Tough gel: a perfect platform for designing chemo-mechano-chemically responsive multi-functional materials

Abstract

Various smart materials in the form of gel can change shape and size in response to external stimuli such as temperature, light, pH, electric and magnetic fields. However, these sensing and actuations are single route chemo-mechanical response. Most gels are intrinsically weak unable to pass enough force onto the macromolecules to induce the inverse feedback of mechano-chemical response. The idea of this proposed work is to develop tough gels with improved mechanical integrity and demonstrate its capability as a general platform for creating new dynamic adaptive and autonomous materials.
