Experimental Measurement of Fluidic Thrust Vectoring on Internal and External Expansion Hypersonic Nozzles
Abstract
– This project contributes directly to the AFRL Hypersonics Game Changing Technology area by conducting the first experimental test of thrust vectoring on a scramjet nozzle. The research would involve the use of fluidic thrust vectoring (FTV) as a hypersonic vehicle control system that would replace the traditional aerodynamic controls currently used on hypersonic vehicles. FTV employs the injection of a secondary flow into the nozzle exit flow to steer the exhaust and thus vector the thrust. This can potentially be achieved at significantly lower mass and complexity than mechanical thrust vectoring systems, yielding more efficient scramjet designs.
