Avian Inspired Morphing Manufacturing and Measurement System

Abstract

This DURIP proposal requests two separate pieces of equipment to support the research thrusts of on-going BRI program on "avian-inspired multifunctional morphing vehicles," specifically adaptive manufacturing of muscular-skeletal structures and the measurement of fluid-structure interaction and aerodynamics of morphing wing aircraft. A volumetric (3D) time-resolved PIV system from LaVision, Inc will be used to support aerodynamic studies and a 3D Systems ProX100 direct metal printer will be used to support the development of spatially refined actuators, sensors and structures.
